Homework

Homework begins in the academically structured pre-kindergarten program and continues through sixth grade. Students learn strong organizational habits and personal responsibility from a structured homework program. Parents are partners in this process by providing the time and tools each child needs.

A kindergarten student may have 20 minutes of homework plus 20 minutes of reading per day. A fourth grader may have sixty to ninety minutes of homework in addition to thirty minutes of reading per evening. An upper-class student can anticipate ninety minutes of homework per night, project work, and reading.

The A.C.S. curriculum equals or surpasses that of any public school. A.C.S. students also receive instruction in Armenian history, language, and culture giving them a more varied and enriched education.

Homework is an integral part of the educational process. Homework is assigned in grades one through six on a regular basis.

Homework Guidelines for Parents:

  1. Provide a study area: Good lighting, proper seating at a table or desk, adequate materials such as paper, pencils, erasers, etc., sufficient space. Distractions such as radio, TV, family conversation, and phones should be eliminated until homework is completed.

  2. Provide a specific time period: Some time period should be regularly used. Establish rules against using the phone, watching TV, and listening to music. These rules should be enforced until all the homework is completed neatly and accurately.

  3. Think positively: Encourage your child to understand the value of homework. Any accomplishment requires work, practice and consistency. Give as much assistance as possible, but remember that homework is your child's responsibility.

  4. Supervise homework: Make certain that your child has enough time, understands directions, and works carefully. Parents can help by editing or checking homework. Help you child organize for long-term projects.

  5. Help the homework habit: If your child doesn't bring homework home, call the teacher at school to determine whether your child is completing it in class, forgetting it, or failing to bring the work home.
